Scene
A woman in an empty room
in the company of a dog, a cat, and a bird,
unrolls a faded Oriental onto the floor.
The cat bounces onto the carpet,
rolls herself out along the nap,
sprawls like an open door at a dinner party,
where a little wine is spilled,
a little indiscreet conversation is shared
about the warp and weft of character,
which is hard to weave without mistakes.
The bird drops a feather,
a message to the cat who imagines
other arrangements to their dance.
The woman drags the rug, the cat, the feather
to the other side of the room,
for no reason discernable to any of them.
The rug lies looking up at the ceiling,
unencumbered by function, contemplating air,
considering the portage of, say, memory,
voices of lovers in pursuit of passion,
children pretending to be on other planets,
merchants calculating profits,
a single woman keening, low-voiced,
into an empty room, the dog,
who can’t sing, sniffing at a spot
where once something happened.
